Magic Music

Magic sounds from a lonely guitar
coming from the room next door.
Sounds of singing and I find I'm
slowly walking cross the floor.

There's an atmosphere of music
happy voices in the air.
Silently I join the party
want to sing, but do I dare?

Hey Mr. Music maker, won't you play a song for me?
I'm just in the mood for singing,
so please play a melody.
You can make it soft and gentle
you can make it 'sweet and hot',
so play a song, and I will sing
and give you everything I've got!

Songs of love, and songs of laughter
'til the early morning light,
we'll remember ever after,
we could never say goodnight.

So what happens? Do we know it?
Time will tell, but yet I'd say,
we're a team I think we show it,
music always finds the way!

Hey Mr. Music maker, won't you play a song for me?
I'm just in the mood for singing,
so please play a melody.
You can make it soft and gentle
you can make it sweet and hot
so play a song, and I will sing
and give you everything I've got!

THE STORY BEHIND this song:
This is the oldest of my songs on my debut album and one of the first two songs I recorded the first time I went to Nashville....back then when I thought this was going to be a ‘once in a lifettime experience’ and just for fun. I looked at all my old songs to see if I could still relate to them, and if I still liked them and this one stood out as one I still enjoyed a lot.

This song was written when I just started singing in a Swing band. It was inspired by an evening with lots of happy people just singing and having a great time. The guitar player in the song invited me to sing with his band and we toured most of the eastern part of Denmark, having a great time and he introduced me to Swing Music, which now has a great place in my heart now too as well as Country Music. Is there ANYTHING like music that can bring people together, zap you way back in time and emotions, remembering things you thought you had forgotten. Like when I hear the record I listened to while my dog was sick and died, I get all those feelings back and start crying again...15 years later! In Denmark we have a saying that: ‘people meet and sweet music starts’ (or something like that)....I don’t know if that saying goes in English too....but I think you know what I mean. Like when couples hear ‘their song’ they seem to fall in love again, remembering how they felt that nite it all ‘happened’.

This was a meeting with a total stranger and yet we both knew that we had to make more music together. And so we did for several years. Magic music.

SIDE STORY:
When I went to the studio the first time, I had NO idea what was going to happen and how. I was told to bring a recording of the song, and lucky for me I actually HAD a recording where my ‘Swing-band-leader’ played and I sang. He loved Swing and Jazz so he played A LOT of swingy chords and harmonies. The studio band look REAL worried, if I wanted it LIKE THAT? And they looked REAL happy when I told them that it didn’t have to be THAT jazzy, as long as we kept the feeling in the song, and basic harmonies....and so we did. Six months later when I was back to record more songs, they wanted to listen to my first recording a bit, to hear my style again....and they all look REAL amazed and said....WOW...I can’t believe we DID that, in that way! They didn’t remember. It was the shift in tempo/feeling, that was not very normal to them, following me as I sang.

During my next recording sessions I have often been told that I do some things that you just don’t usually do, but in MY songs it seems to fit that way! I take that as a compliment, as it is meant too, from these totally awesome musicians. But mostly it is probably because I have never been educated in music, so I don’t know what ‘you can and cannot do’ – this may be my weakness but also my strenght...at least I do things as I hear them and feel them, in my own way and i am not ‘burdened’ with knowledge about it. This may just be why people can listen to my music all the time and it only grows on them!?....so they say! And THAT makes me happy!
